#177; The Joy of Ordering, Sneaking and Farting
Calm down, I can see those eyebrows raised at the title but I can assure you I’ve not turned into a flatulent dictator. No, no, you see, there was once a game where the simplest things were just the best things about it. I’m not talking about your run to every cover, go crazy Call of Duty’s, or your battle after battle after battle oh game over now Final Fantasy’s, no, not at all. I’m talking about the absolute legend that was Abe, and his PS1 series of games Oddworld: Abe’s Oddyssey/Exodus.

Follow me! *slaps*
The Oddworld games were, and still are without a doubt, some of my all time favourite games to play and even to this day really do stand out and play extremely well. Games tend to age quite badly as new trends, genres and technology exceed them but the two PS1 Oddworld games are just as brilliant and still mind blowing difficult too. I think it was just how simply fun it was to play even with the difficulty – running around shouting ‘hello!’ at fellow mudokons whilst ordering them to work and going to fart on them was ridiculously brilliant. Disturbingly brilliant. But that’s what made Abe’s little series so special – it was different but it was brilliant.
In fact when I owned my PS3 until earlier this year I had the Oddworld games downloaded from the Playstation Network as part of their Playstation 1 library of games you can download and even before I sold off my console, I played those games more than any Playstation 3 game I’d ever owned apart from Metal Gear Solid 4 and probably Little Big Planet. Perhaps it’s because it’s so inter weaved into my past but it just says a lot about some games nowadays when they can’t even compare to a 14 year old game that is probably a minute size compared to how big games are now.
I’m not sure how Abe manages to make himself be so sweet but he does. How can anyone not love Abe? You also may be interested to know that there’s lots of rumours that these classic 2D games may be brought into the 21st century all HD’d up and looking awesome very soon which would be absolutely awesome. Oddworld Inhabitants know just how to get my money! But whether it be the group slaps, the dramatic chases from the Scrabs, the farting, the slapping or just the addictive and time consuming gameplay, the rose tinted specs are well deserved for this fabulous classic series. I also loved the laughing gas areas too, for some reason. Maybe it was the whole ‘collection of mudokons not listening to you but giggling away like children’ thing. Can you tell I’m easily amused? But I hope you guys remember this fabulous series just as much as I do with much love going back to it because it was just awesome and I hope it does indeed return as the rumours so strongly suggest. As I say, it’s easily accesible even today as the two original titles are both on Steam/GOG for PC owners as well as the Playstation Network for PS3 fans.
Now… Work!
